UPCOMING STATEWIDE BALLOT ISSUES

Ohio Farm Bureau-Supports Issue 1
-“Our members created policies through our grassroots process which strongly supports these proposed constitutional changes,” said Adam Sharp, executive vice president of Ohio Farm Bureau. “Making the process of amending Ohio’s Constitution more fair and thoughtful is something our members think is important and this resolution will accomplish just that.”

Ohio Farm Bureau-Issue 1 FAQ
-The ballot measure will be part of a special election Aug. 8. If passed, the resolution will raise the threshold for approving constitutional amendments to 60% and also will modify the requirements for the petition process for proposals to change the constitution, requiring no less than 5% of the electors represented from every county of the
state to sign a petition. Currently, signatures must be gathered for only 44 of Ohio’s 88 counties. Additionally, the initiative would eliminate the 10-day period that petitioners are granted to replace any invalid signatures. Notably, Issue 1 only applies to constitutional changes, and the initiated petition process to amend Ohio law remains unchanged.

Ohio Farm Bureau-Podcast Special–Issue 1
-Special interest groups make it more difficult for farmers to produce food and do not believe they believe is good practice.  This raises the prices of what is being purchased.

-Amended 172 times and is 15 times larger than the us constitution.
-Outside investors have invested 50 million dollars for their best interested. 32 states do not allows this at all.
-By passing this it will be harder for special interest groups to target Ohio and they will target other states.

UPCOMING STATEWIDE BALLOT ISSUES

Ohio Capitol Journal-From home rule to the initiative itself, Ohio would have never won many reforms under a 60% rule
-This principle of trusting individual citizens to make the best choices for themselves and society is at the heart – is at the very core – of the debate over State Issue 1.
Trusting citizens to make the best choices for themselves is what Ohio’s founders believed. And it is what their successors believed and insisted upon across many generations.

The Columbus Dispatch-Letters: There’s hypocrisy, irony and an out-of-state billionaire behind Issue 1
A YES vote will double the number of petition signatures needed to get onto the ballot and raise the approval threshold from 50% + 1 to 60%.
A “yes” vote will make it virtually impossible for citizen initiatives to get passed in the future.

ACLU OHIO-TOP 5 REASONS TO VOTE NO ON ISSUE 1 ON AUGUST 8TH
-On August 8, 2023, Ohioans will be asked to decide one of the most consequential elections in our lifetime. The question is: Should Ohioans break from 110 years of our history and make it harder for citizens to amend our constitution?

Daily Advocate-Know Before You Vote on Issue 1
-Is unnecessary because Ohioans have used their initiative power judiciously, approving only 19 of 71 (citizen initiated) of proposed amendments over 111 years and in 2015. Ohioans approved an amendment prohibiting businesses from using the initiative process to obtain any special benefit.

Special Election for Special Interests
Out-of-state special interests lobbied to create this August 8th special election, just so they can permanently rig Ohio’s constitution in their favor, ending majority rule as we know it.  It would destroy the sacred principle of “one person one vote” by allowing a small group of voters to make decisions for everyone else.

Ohio Right to Life-Protecting Ohio’s Preborn By Voting YES on Issue 1
Requiring 60% of voter approval before passing an amendment.
No longer allowing half of Ohioans to be ignored in the petition process.
Eliminating loopholes allowing fraudulent petitioners excess time to collect signatures.
Restoring trust & confidence in our state’s guiding document, making it no longer vulnerable to the political winds of our day.

CatholicsNationalAgency-Jim Caviezel to join rosary rally for ballot measure that could impact Ohio abortion vote
-Joe Condit, founder of Catholic Speakers Organization, told the National Catholic Register: “This entire issue boils down to protecting parents and the rights they hold with their children. It’s time parents of all religions play offense and vote yes on Aug. 8. The opposing side has masterminded a campaign to trick the Christian side to think a ‘no’ vote protects the constitution. A winning vote in August will help set the state for best protecting parental rights in November.”

-In May, House Republicans passed a resolution 62-37 that, if approved by voters, would increase the voter threshold to enact new constitutional amendments from a simple majority to 60%.
Abortion rights advocates are working to put a ballot question before Ohio voters in November that would enshrine abortion access and other reproductive rights in the constitution. Republican officials have openly said Issue 1 aims, in part, to keep that issue from passing.

The Washington Post-Ohio Issue 1 and its potential impact on abortion, explained
-If Issue 1 passes, it would take effect immediately, meaning future ballot initiatives in Ohio — including the one on abortion this fall — would require 60 percent of the vote to pass, rather than just a simple majority.
